This is interesting… Can technology force us to engage with content? And can the same technology know if we are not paying attention? Usher’s video for “Chains” seems to want to test out this theory. In an effort to make people think harder about the racial divide, the video activates a viewer’s computer’s web camera to scan and identify the viewer’s facial features. The second the viewer looks away from the computer, the video immediately stops playing. The artist (Via Huffington Post) stated that the “I chose to introduce the song through the ‘Don’t Look Away’ experience because it is important not only to feel the issue but to face it,”. An interesting way to use digital technology to promote empathy?
